Gulaku 04:28
Gulaku The Sumatran fields of sugar cane as green as your jealousy will whiten in their final state like the fabric of your jilbab a shifting fire is nestling in the hollows of your bitter heart your eyes are vividly flashing like the cameras when I'm onstage Is this your idea of ecstasy a sugar daddy and a big white car your shallowness mortifies me, satisfaction unraveling and the owner turns to kindness when he kicks his dog out from the dog oh queen, you dusted rusted highness is this the cream you've been waiting for the moth cannot help himself, he cremates against the light I watch you try to buy and sell your affection like a fat cigar you think you've won them over , their money for your gold flesh but you're the one who suffers, lips never tasting the sting of love and you envy the attention and the beauty and grace given to me but the mirror shows your hearts reflection poor you, poor lady, poor sugar daddy poor you, poor lady, poor sugar daddy

Holy Raven 04:03
Holy Raven The holy raven, black ribbons decorating her dresser like baby bunting Mangoes and berries, swimming in a pool of fragrant cream Lutheran sister tapping on my door, sliding glass into the laundry room Where I stand folding, shredded bits of the scarlet calvary And a blessed angel came to find me on a flying broom and she was saying, if you can smell the rosy water, then so can we But the grip of her holy hand was sieving the drift of the powdering sand and counting time and saving souls, she escaped me, me Fathers and daughters are always the loosing ones in such religions the winning roles are always blessed with kindly mothers and saving sons in the priest's garden a spider's dewy web will catch our eyes while silken architects weave our glowing evenings by and the sisters came to pray in the chapel of restlessness and they were saying if you can sow this bitter earth ,then baby so can we but the hem of a passing nun's wimple caused the pond to shiver and ripple and their reflections in the water mixed with earth and sea, sea and the sky the sky the sky the sky the sky not the carving bird but the water will take to the sky the sky the sky the sky the sky the sky not the carving bird and the sky the sky the sky the sky the sky not the carving bird but the fish and water will take to the sky oh, the sky the sky the sky the sky the sky

I fell, I fell and I broke it, I broke it, I broke it, I broke it My leg and my own heart Freedom comes in form of love and suffering Birds and worms can testify Pennies and Rupiah they spill from my pockets like a rain of warm money and sex I know your heart has goodness I know it, I know it, I know it, I know it, I know it But no window can find me, no lover can save me I'm not your wife but I want your car Oh the sweet sound of family, it's ringing in my ears An impossible dream Why can't my baby be enough, enough, enough, enough These pennies and rupiah just don't cut Let my tongue lick these wounds clean Wounds that soften, that soften, that soften, that soften, that soften But where's my golden potion to weld this all together? I'm not your wife but I want your fucking car Oh the glitter of the water, can I find it in this hospital? I have it, I have it, I have it, I have it Well okay, I'll just get it, I'll get it, I'll get it, I'll get it

House 04:01
Build me a fine house, wash out your hair Hide me in the valley where the water runs clear I will find a ladder to collapse over this river A bridge is formed, a taming force, oh Dreams are made when finally waking up, and remembering The haunted one that chases you but you escape it And the high school locker filled with velvet clothes And your eyes, your eyes peering through it, oh Snakes and burning houses are not a threat to me In the depths of my dreams I have no fear If the river floods our backyard, will you carry me To the bridge of woven hair? Write up our wills and leave our basement to the dead A handsome house awaits us in the morning Your coffee on the window sill and our children in our beds Oh the water it saves us from the fire

about

Megan O’Donoghue’s first full-length recording, is a deeply personal work from the Feminine perspective. This work tells stories from personal experience and from the lives of female characters within the Hindu epic poems Mahabarata and Ramayana. “Peshawar” is greatly influenced by Megan’s life in Central Java, Indonesia, and from touring with wayang kulit (traditional shadow puppet theater) as a female singer (pesindhen). The pieces, accompanied by the cross-cultural music group Gemati, combine musical traditions such as the folk ballad, keroncong (Portuguese-influenced Indonesian folk music), karawitan (Javanese court music) and other traditions which naturally reflect Megan’s study and experience within these worlds. The lyrics also seamlessly change from English to Indonesian to Javanese languages.
